Cold Weather Alert: Know the Hazards – Stay Safe!
Severe cold and wind chills are on the way in the middle part of this week. If you’re working outside in these conditions, please be mindful of the extreme cold and its potential dangers.
- Frostbite: Prolonged exposure to cold can freeze skin and underlying tissue, especially on fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Watch for numbness, discoloration, or hard, waxy skin.
- Hypothermia: When body heat is lost faster than it’s produced, core temperatures drop, leading to confusion, slurred speech, and extreme fatigue. This can become life-threatening quickly.
- Slips and Falls: Ice and snow increase the risk of falls. Wear proper footwear with good traction and walk cautiously.
- Equipment Malfunctions: Cold can affect tools, vehicles, and equipment, leading to failures or unexpected hazards. Inspect gear before use.
- Overexertion: Heavy clothing and cold air make physical tasks harder, increasing fatigue and the risk of injuries.
Stay Safe:
- Dress in layers, including windproof and waterproof outerwear.
- Limit exposure by taking regular breaks in a warm area.
- Stay hydrated and fueled—your body works harder in cold weather.
- Report hazards like icy surfaces or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
Your safety is the top priority—prepare well, stay aware, and protect yourself and your team.
