Pipes Specializes in NEC Changes and Helps Shape the Training Culture at Encore Electric

From classes that cover basic safety and tools to advanced wiring, troubleshooting, and leadership sessions, Encore Electric offers more than 100 different courses through Encore University. Life Safety Technical Resource Damien Pipes is one of the many instructors that helps shape the training culture at Encore Electric.
At Encore University, Pipes specializes in the National Electrical Code (NEC), which is updated on a three-year cycle. The latest edition, the 2026 NEC, includes major changes that build on the 2023 code book and previous code cycles. Pipes studies the code book and finds engaging ways to share important information with the rest of the organization.

Answer: The stuff in the [code] book is there because something happened, somewhere – some facility, some house. The class isn’t just about passing inspection; it’s about protecting people who depend on the systems Encore Electric builds.
How did you become an instructor at Encore Electric?
It started as a simple, “Hey, can you help out?” and I filled in to lead a class. I’m passionate about the code and love learning, so I ended up stumbling into it. Overall, I loved teaching, mentoring, and developing people in the field. White board instructing is different, but I’m super passionate and just curious on finding the answer.
What has your career journey looked like so far at Encore Electric?
I’ve been at Encore for 12 years, and I started here as a journeyman. In the first three months at the job, I became a crew lead and later became a foreman.
I recently became a Life Safety Technical Resource. Now I’m supporting preconstruction and other project engineers and project managers from a different seat than in the field.
People – but it’s not just people anymore. In 12 years, you don’t call them people, we call them family.
In a few words, how would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is bizarre and practical.
Outside of work, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an artist and I release music. I’m always running around playing music.
What is your favorite food?
Jerk fish
If you could instantly master one skill, what would it be?
Work related – fire alarm, and outside of work – music.
