Utah is known as the “Beehive State”.  For the people of Utah, the beehive symbolizes the Utah community as each person in Utah works together to support and help one another and to create a successful industry. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, some 80 miles northwest of Salt Lake City. Utah was thus connected to the East and West. From the 1860s to the 1920s spur rails were connected to the Wasatch Canyons, bringing hundreds of copper, silver, gold, and lead mines. Gigantic smelters were later built to refine the ore. Known today as the center hub of the Intermountain West, the value of their East and West junction continues to drive the future economy of Greater Salt Lake via rail, the Interstates 80 and 15 junction, along with data, “the new gold”, and its intercontinental fiber junctions.

Salt Lake was proud to host the Olympic Winter Games in February 2002. The largest city ever to host the winter games, Salt Lake prepared well in advance for the most prestigious event of its history. Today, Utah continues a high level of self-reliance, recently listed as the most independent state in the US by WalletHub when comparing five dependencies: financial, government, job market, international trade and vice.
