Steven Wehr, Account Manager with Encore Electric in Utah, is one of the many employees who have grown their career with the company. He started as a journeyman in December 2016 and built his technical and leadership skills through field roles to his current management role, which is focused on preconstruction work to help establish Encore Electric as a leading electrical contractor in the Utah area.

We’re here with Steven Wehr. Hey, Steven. Why did you decide to join Encore Electric?

When I moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado, I interviewed with Encore Electric. I was already a Journeyman and was looking for a company that focused on safety and consistency, plus was technologically advanced and working on cool projects. Encore Electric was a great fit.

Over my time with Encore Electric, I’ve been able to grow so much – from a journeyman to my management role now. It reaffirms I made the right decision about working with Encore Electric.

What do you enjoy most about your job at Encore Electric?

I enjoy the atmosphere of challenge. Encore Electric and our Utah team members are always pushing each other to learn and grow, which means we’re always learning something new about electrical solutions. I find this continuous learning to be very fulfilling.

With a skilled trade workforce shortage, what would you say to encourage others to consider a career in the electrical industry?

Joining the trades gives you lifelong skills to support yourself, creating a sense of independence and self-sufficiency that you might not find in other jobs. Plus, for those who like to move around, it can be very mobile. I’ve worked in five states and made a good living in every one of them.

The skilled trades are also much more of a creative outlet than people give it credit for. Everyday, we’re encountering challenges that require us to think outside the box for a solution.

What skills and attitude are most needed to succeed in your daily work?

Being motivated, a self-starter and having a good attitude will help you succeed at Encore Electric and as an electrician. Plus, it’s important to always be open to learning – everyone on the team, from the first-year electrician to the 40-year veteran has something to teach you that can help you become a better at your craft.

Why did you move to Utah?

I moved to Utah for the mountain lifestyle, I love to ski and mountain bike! Work is great, but having a good quality of life is just as important to me. I was working at a different company in Utah and when I found out Encore Electric was expanding to the market, I jumped at the chance to return to a company I’d enjoyed so much.

How has Encore Electric in Utah supported your career?

Encore Electric continually provides me with training to grow in my role. They invest in the training that they know is needed for success, not only for myself but for the people around me. This commitment to its employees really sets Encore Electric apart.

Any specific project at Encore Electric that has been most meaningful to you?

My entire culmination of projects and experiences at Encore Electric is what makes my career meaningful. There are highs and lows, as with any job, but I’ve been lucky to have people at Encore Electric to support me through all of it.
